Stupid Action

1981-82 Topps Denis Potvin – card #130E

Denis Potvin 1981-82 Topps Super Action cardWow. This card is bad…very bad.

If Hall of Fame defenseman Denis Potvin was looking for a flattering portrayal of his career, it would not be this 1981-82 Topps hockey card.

At the bottom, the card says “Super Action”. If falling backwards on top of your own goalie is considered “super action”, then this card certainly delivers.

Denis Potvin 1981-82 Topps Super Action (back)From the exasperated look on Potvin’s face as he falls, to the stick flying out of his hand, this is one photo that should not have ever been on a hockey card. That bit of blurriness at the right – part of another Islander’s jersey, perhaps? – just makes the photo suck even harder.

I don’t quite understand why *this* photo was selected. Did someone at Topps have it in for Potvin, and decide to make him look like a jackass on his own hockey card? All of the “Super Action” cards are of players who appeared in the 1981 playoffs Well, the Islanders ended that playoff run as Stanley Cup champions, with Potvin earning 25 points in 18 games.

And yet, the best “super action” that Topps could find was Denis Potvin tripping over his own goalie?

Why this unflattering photograph was forever immortalized on a piece of cardboard, we’ll never know. For now, all we can do is laugh and wonder what the goalie is saying…probably something like “Dude, get the #$%& off of me!”
