National Hockey Card Day is this Saturday, January 18

nhcd_usa_3National Hockey Card Day returns once again in both Canada and the U.S. It will take place in both countries Saturday, January 18, 2014. Hockey fans who visit a participating retailer will receive a special, five-card pack of Upper Deck hockey cards. National Hockey Card Day (or NHCD as us cool kidsĀ  call it) started in Canada in 2009 and in 2012 in the United States. But this year, there are a few new twists.

The 2014 sets in both the U.S. and Canada will be bigger, as the set size has grown from 16 to 21 cards. This will make the set slightly more challenging to complete, as you’ll need five more cards than in previous years.

Fans in both countries can also acquire the 21st card by making a $10 purchase of Upper Deck products. In previous years, that purchase usually had to be a pack of Upper Deck trading cards like Black Diamond or UD Series One, usually costing $3 to $5. So, be prepared to spend a few more bucks if you want that elusive last card to complete your set.

The 21st card in the Canada NHCD set features Nathan MacKinnon and 2013 Calder Trophy winner Jonathan Huberdeau.

The 21st card in the USA NHCD set shows Seth Jones and Alex Galchenyuk.

21st card for U.S. collectorsThose in Canada can also find five different uncut, eight-card sheets at London Drugs and Toys R Us, and at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Some of these uncut sheets will also be given out at NHL games in Canada on January 18.

In the U.S., the uncut sheets will only be given out at Saturday’s New York Islanders game. A few thousand of these sheets will also be donated to the Defending the Blue Line Charity. You can see images of these sheets on the Upper Deck blog.

Here are some helpful links so you can start planning on putting together this year’s NHCD set.

So, who is going to try and put together a set? You know that I will.

  1. I’d like to but there are no retailers in my vicinity. We have three shops over here in Northwest Indiana now (as opposed to one at this time last year). None of them are on the list which is funny because they were all taken off the Panini lists too for Father’s Day and Black Friday promotions. Something is amiss at the Circle K.

    1. This may not work for you in the US, but I know up here in Canada last year, there was an email UD provided where people who lived “too far” from a participating local hobby shop could have a pack sent free of charge. I believe the qualifications where 25km’s or something. Keep an eye out for it as I am going to assume they will be doing that this year.
