Five-Photo Friday is a way for me to share some of the more interesting hockey images that I have collected throughout the years. Some of these I took myself, while others are curated from various sources. Read on to see a sidewalk art from a defunct TV station, a scoreboard like you’ve never seen and a table hockey game for girls.

stop_it_right_thereEddie O. says STOP it right here! Puck in Play – Color commentator Eddie Olczyk famously says “Stop it right here,” while breaking down replays. Ushers at the Chicago Blackhawks games have this sign in hand and block the stairway when the puck is in play, so as to make the dweebs wait until the whistle before heading back to their seats.

“Hockey Goalie” – In the early 1950s, photographer Irving Penn took a series of portraits showing everyday people dressed in their work clothes. “Hockey Goalie” is a stunning black-and-white picture of New York Rangers netminder Chuck Rayner.

wolves_scoreboardChicago Wolves scoreboard – Back in March, I went to a job fair hosted by the Chicago Wolves of the AHL. I was there a good four hours before puck drop. The fair was held in the lobby area, but I peered into the arena and saw that the scoreboard was lowered for maintenance.

history_will_be_madeHistory will be made. Tonight. This stenciled sidewalk art was near one of the schools that I teach at. I snapped this picture on May 5, 2011. That night, the Vancouver Canucks played the Nashville Predators in the playoffs, beating them 4-2. The television station Versus is now the NBC Sports Network.

Hello Kitty Air Hockey Game – I took this screenshot back in January 2003 — over 11 years ago. It is a Hello Kitty Air Hockey Game that was on a Japanese website. I used Google Translate, which was in its infancy back then and not very good. The translation hilariously reads as follows:

In the electromotive type air hockey game, it is appearance of the Sanrio Company Ltd. character. It repels the pack [sic] which comes up by power of the air with the racket, makes partner goal thrust, it is the same straw raincoat excitation game at such as game center. Because it is the combination, [Kitty] and Daniel, it can enjoy regardless of the man and woman.

Apparently, one of the selling points of the game is that it features both Hello Kitty and her boyfriend Dear Daniel, making this an appropriate toy for either a boy or a girl. The cost of 3,980 yen back in 2003 would have been around $40 U.S.D.
