I was cleaning out my filing cabinet and found some old drawings I did in high school. Art was always my favorite subject, and I took it all four years. I would try to draw or create hockey images whenever possible. During my junior year — right around the time of the 1992 Winter Olympics — we had to make a few blended colored pencil drawings for an assignment. I made three, using hockey as my inspiration.
Patrick Sundstrom, New Jersey Devils – This picture is from Sunstrom’s 1991-92 Pro Set Platinum hockey card. I removed the audience and put diagonal lines in their place to try and convey the speed of the game. In hindsight, I wish I took out the Rangers player behind him too, and made it just about Sundstrom.
The SJB with a hockey stick logo in the lower right corner is how I signed my name on my drawings at the time.
Tony Esposito, Chicago Blackhawks – I cannot seem to find the reference photo that I used for this drawing. And I don’t know why I didn’t draw in the Blackhawks logo, which would have made this picture five times cooler.
Chris Terreri, New Jersey Devils – One of my absolute favorite hockey photos is the one found on the back of Terreri’s 1991-92 Pro Set hockey card. I added the lines leading to his glove for dramatic effect.
Looking back, I’m not sure why I drew two Devils’ players. I like the Terreri pic, but I’m sure I could have found a more interesting player than Sundstrom. If anyone knows what reference picture I may have used for Esposito — maybe it is from a card? — hit me up with a comment. ■

Those are awesome, my friend. Better than anything I could do on my best day. The “lines” that you put in the backgrounds make them look like Metal Universe designs of the 90s (or I guess now if you count Fleer Retro/Showcase). Nicely done, indeed!

Al, that might be the picture. I’ve actually had an unsigned copy of the photo since the early 1990s. But I’m not 100% sure that’s the one I used, based on the position of the crossbar. I always tried to get everything “just right,” so who knows.

Long time reader, first time commenter. Really like the site, fires up my sense of nostalgia for my own cards.
You’re not gonna believe this one… Pulled out a box of cards while visiting my parents, whilst loading up PuckJunk on my phone. Started browsing through my Devils’ cards, came across a Terreri/Brodeur card from 94-95. Said ‘huh, wonder what happened to Terreri’. Picked up my phone to google him and immediately saw your Terreri drawing on the top of the page. I was a little spooked.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed my random little story. Love the site, keep up the great work.
