And Why Did I Buy This Hockey Card?

diamond_edition_chris_cheliosChris Chelios is my all-time favorite hockey player. I try to collect all of his cards. But I may have gone too far with this one.

You may notice the garish “Diamond Edition 1 of 1” logo printed near the bottom. Basically, some company called Masterpieces Collectibles bought a bunch of commons, defaced the front of the cards with an embossed silvery logo, then sold each one with a “certificate” stating that they would not deface another copy of the exact same card.

Seems legit.

Wait, no. No it does not. That seems stupid. And I feel pretty stupid for buying this card.

The eBay auction stated that this was given away at a show. In the past, card companies would give out variations of their standard cards, usually printed with the name of the show and an edition number, i.e. 1/1 or 6/10. Other than the foil stamping, these were pretty much the same cards you’d pull from a pack.

But this card wasn’t even modified by Upper Deck, and I doubt it was given away. It is some sort of unlicensed aftermarket modification by a company calling itself “Masterpiece Collectibles.”

diamond_edition_certificateIt comes with a certificate of authenticity, stating that no other card exactly like this one will be stamped with the silver foil logo on the front.

What a scam!

Maybe I should take all my old Pro Set cards and stamp them “Puck Junk 1 of 1 Edition.” And then I would have found a way to make Pro Set cards even more worthless.

  1. Yeah these supposed one of ones are pretty depressing. I once had a post about a person defacing a Gretzky rookie and wrote his own name Arlindo on the back of the card. The card did sell for 60 bucks or so eventually but I guess that would have been a one of one as well? Not sure if Arlindo made multiple copies or not.

  2. I was going through some boxes of old hockey cards and came across a Diamond 1 of 1 Edition of Gordie Howe.
Do you know if it has any value?

    Thanks

    1. Probably a couple of bucks. These cards are more of a curiosity than anything, but are not variants that are recognized by price guides.

      1. Thanks for the response. I know I paid more than a couple of bucks way back when. I was so fixated on the 1 of 1 aspect that I lost control of my wallet!

        Regards
