Buy ’em before the prices go up
Yesterday, Upper Deck announced that they are now the exclusive seller of memorabilia autographed by Connor McDavid. This comes hot on the heels of the Edmonton Oilers naming McDavid their team captain last week; the youngest team captain in NHL history.
That said, if you were on the fence about collecting Connor McDavid memorabilia items, now is the time to do it. McDavid is quickly becoming the face of the NHL, and with that the demand for his autograph and other collectibles are going to go up. Signed items sold by Upper Deck are not cheap, but if you shop elsewhere, you can find items autographed by McDavid for much less.
Here are four collectibles — some autographed, others not but still unique enough to merit consideration — that are relatively affordable now, but may appreciate nicely in the future.
McDavid Autographed Photograph
When collecting autographs, often it is more desirable to purchase an item that was signed by a player earlier in his career — especially during his rookie season. Upper Deck is pre-selling photos for $400, which is steep, and these would be signed during McDavid’s second season. But you can still pick up photos autographed by McDavid for between $175 for an 8″ x 10″ to $300 for a 16″ x 20″. (SportsMemorabilia.com)
Oilers Puck Autographed by McDavid
Likewise, Upper Deck is pre-selling pucks autographed by McDavid for $299. However, you can still find a wide variety of pucks signed by McDavid for a lot less than that. Sports Memorabilia has an Oilers signed puck (above) for $219, and an official Oilers NHL Puck for $230. Both come with a display box and ship for free. Plus, these were also signed during McDavid’s rookie campaign. (SportsMemorabilia.com)
Game-Used Ice from McDavid’s Debut
Apparently, ice shavings from Connor McDavid’s first game were melted down and are now for sale: either encapsulated inside a crystal puck ($50), affixed to a plaque ($60) or framed with a photo collage ($180). This may not be your cup of, er, ice — it isn’t mine either — but sometimes these can appreciate on the secondary market. There will be a near-limitless amount of signed and unsigned items released during McDavid’s career, while these will be a bit more finite. Hey, there’s only so much ice, right? Hockey Action Figure
During the middle of last season, Imports Dragon released their first series of 6-inch tall NHL Hockey Figures. Among them was an action figure of McDavid, limited to 7,500 pieces. That’s not a lot of figures, considering that McFarlane Toys, when they made their NHL SportsPicks figures, had much larger production runs. While it is safe to say that Imports Dragon will probably make a different McDavid figure in the future, it won’t be his “rookie figure” like this one, and may have a larger production run than 7,500 pieces.
