Another Break, Another Brodeur

A short while ago, my online retailer of choice offered a case break of 2015-16 Upper Deck Black, and I’m guessing the 30 spots were not selling as quickly as they’d hoped. It was the day of the scheduled break, most of the spots were still open and so they PUT IT ON SALE! A pretty decent chunk off, too. Since I had a little money to spare, felt like gambling and never owned any UD Black hockey cards before, I decided to buy a spot.

Time rolls around, the video feed starts and I see my name next to the Maples Leafs. OK, this is promising. Oh wait, they have to run the randomizer and shake up the teams. Shake, shake, shake….

Oh sweet, now I’ve got the Oilers!

Shoot, now they’re randomizing everyone’s names. Shake, shake, shake….

Crap. I got the Devils. Was there anyone good on the Devils that year? (Actually, there were a couple, but this is just my thoughts at the time.)

Now, I don’t have a lot of New Jersey Devils material cards from my pulls over the years. I pretty much have…Martin Brodeur. And I respect Fatty; it’s hard not to. And of the three jersey cards I own, I do think that it’s a cool coincidence that one is a red, one is black, and one is white.

I’m only missing Christmas-tree green. But even though Marty wasn’t with NJ at the time of this box’s release, lo and behold, out pops a relic of his 1998 All Star Jersey. And it’s silver; hey, I’ll take it!

Nobody really associates Martin Brodeur with the St. Louis Blues anyway, and it’s better than walking away with nothing. And while I know Marty’s cards are ubiquitous, it feels like I’m pulling them way more that a lot of other players.

I suppose in the future, we can pull cards that have a swatch of car upholstery from one of Brodeur’s sweet, sweet Enterprise rental car commercials.

But does anyone else feel like they have a player’s card that follows them?
