2019-20 Topps Hockey Stickers Box Break #1

I bought three boxes of 2019-20 Topps Hockey Stickers way back in January, but a lot of stuff happened in my life that kept me from opening and sorting through them. When the NHL restarted its season in late July, I finally had the time and the motivation to open my sticker boxes to try and build a set.

The 2019-20 season is the first time in a long time that Topps made any sort of tangible hockey collectible; the company last made hockey cards for the 2003-04 season. Topps also made sticker albums way back during the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons. Over the past three decades, Panini was the preeminent manufacturer of hockey stickers until Topps got the license for the 2019-20 season.

About 2019-20 Topps Hockey Stickers

2019-20 Topps Hockey Stickers cost about $1 per pack and contain five stickers: four regular stickers and one shiny “foil” sticker. Boxes contain $50 packs and can be bought from the Topps Online Shop. However, you can find boxes in the $30-$40 range on Ebay and from various online card retailers.

Interestingly, the stickers come in foil wrappers that are “crimped” at the top and bottom, just like how sports trading cards are packaged today.

There are 630 stickers in the 2019-20 Topps Hockey Sticker collection, so you would need three boxes to hope to make a complete set. Here is what I got in my first box.

What I Got in My Box

200 regular stickers; two were duplicates.

50 foil stickers: one was a duplicate

Every pack had exactly what it was supposed to have: four regular stickers and one foil sticker. The box had 250 stickers and the entire set has 630 stickers, so it is reasonable to expect that you won’t get any doubles. However, I think getting three doubles in 250 stickers is acceptable.

Breakdown by 100s

Just for the heck of it, I wanted to see how many stickers I got in each grouping of one hundred.

1-99

30 regular stickers
5 foil stickers
= 35 stickers total
(14% of the box)

100-199

29 regular stickers
8 foil stickers
= 37 stickers total
(14.8% of the box)

200-299

38 regular stickers
11 foil stickers
= 49 stickers total
(19.6% of the box)

300-399

33 regular stickers
11 foil stickers
= 44 stickers total
(17.6% of the box)

400-499

30 regular stickers
8 foil stickers
= 38 stickers total
(15.2% of the box)

500-599

34 regular stickers
2 foil stickers
= 36 stickers total
(14.4% of the box)

600-630

6 regular stickers
5 foil stickers
= 11 stickers total
(4.4% of the box)

Other than stickers in the 600s — which are only a small portion of the overall set — I got a pretty even distribution in each grouping of 100; between 14% and 19.6%. That’s nice, since it is also annoying to get a glut of stickers in one range and almost none in another.

Rating 4 out of 5

Building a 2019-20 Topps Hockey Sticker set is not going to be cheap. Hopefully, I don’t get a ton of doubles in my second box. But so far, I am enjoying this set. If you buy a box, expect to get what is advertised: 200 regular stickers and 50 foil stickers, and very few doubles within the box.

  1. YOUR OVERALL ANALYSIS WAS EXCELLENT AND COVERED ALL THE POINTS COLLECTORS WISH TO KNOW – HOWEVER, WHILE NICE LOOKING / ATTRACTIVE IN GENERAL THESE ARE TERRIBLY OVERPRICED AT ONLY 5 FOR $ 1.00 WHICH EQUALS OVER $ 130 WITH NO DUPLICATES TO OBTAIN THE 630 REQUIRED STICKERS – IN THE LAST 10+ YEARS TOPPS OVERALL PRICES HAVE RISEN TO UNACCEPTABLY HIGH LEVELS WHICH MAKE IT APPEAR THEY ARE TRYING TO PROFIT STRAIGHT AWAY RATHER THAN ALL COLLECTORS WAITING 65 +YEARS, SUCH AS MYSELF, TO SEE OLDER ITEMS RISE IN VALUE – BEST TO SAVE YOUR $$$ IN THIS REGARD AND APPLY THEM TO A BETTER OVERALL COLLECTIBLE VALUE.
