What Happens to My Collection When I Die?

(Player not working? Listen to Collectors Corner on SoundCloud.)

Many collectors don’t think about what will happen to their beloved treasures once they pass away — and might be surprised to learn where their collectibles end up. Ron Barr and I also discuss why sports memorabilia seems to retain its value more so than other types of collectibles.

Buying Vintage Sports Card Packs

(Player not working? Listen to Collectors Corner on SoundCloud.)

In the latest and greatest episode of Collectors Corner, Ron Barr and I talk about buying — and opening — vintage sports card packs with the hopes of pulling a big hit.

Of course, longtime readers of this site will remember when I did a vintage OPC pack break and pulled that Bill Ranford rookie card with the gum stuck to it.

We talk about the trading card set for the short-lived Alliance of American Football, and why no one will probably want those cards.

We also discuss the new Beckett Online Autograph Review service, and how it is going to be a game-changer for the hobby. The episode is 10 minutes jam-packed with sports-collecting goodness.

The 30th Anniversary of the 1989 Upper Deck Baseball Card Set

In Episode 8 of Collectors Corner, Ron Barr and I discuss the 1989 Upper Deck Baseball card set, and how it changed baseball cards forever when it made its debut 30 years ago. The clip is 10-minutes of reminiscing about the good old days of card collecting — when having photos on the back(!) of a trading card was unheard of.

March 2019 Chicago Sports Spectacular

On March 15, 16 and 17, I attended the twice-annual Chicago Sports Spectacular, which is generally considered the second-largest sports memorabilia show after The National. Ron Barr and I discuss about what the show was like and my quest to find a $5 box of Pro Set cards. We also talk about a record-setting NBA Championship ring and why high-end autograph collecting is not a worthwhile investment.

The Evolution of Sport Card Shows

Collectors Corner #4 – March 8, 2019

In the fourth episode of Collectors Corner, Ron Barr and I talk about collecting sports autographs through the mail (TTM). For those who are unfamiliar with TTM, it is when you write to a player — usually at his team’s address if a current player, or his home address if he is retired — and send a fan letter and some items asking to be autographed. We discuss how to get started, some do’s and don’ts, and more.

This clip is just 11 minutes — short enough to listen to on your next break.

Collectors Corner #3 – March 1, 2019

After a week off (due to the passing of my beloved basset hound Gomez), Collectors Corner was back.

In the third episode, Ron Barr and I talk about graded cards, and grading companies like PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) and BGS (Beckett Grading Services). We also discuss the Michael Jordan Fleer Metal Universe card that sold for over $350,000 at auction, the PSA 9 Bobby Orr “Test Issue” rookie card that sold for over $200,000. and National Hockey Card Day.

Run time is 11 minutes.
