Anyone who has followed this blog for a while knows that Lorne “Gump” Worsley is my favorite player from the Original Six era. I was not alive during that era, and Gump retired before I was even born. But I’ve read his autobiography so many times (I actually own TWO copies of that book) that I feel like I would have been a big fan of his if I was alive and following hockey back then.
That said, I was extremely thrilled to finally get my hands on this 1963-64 Parkhurst card of Worsley. It’s got a bit of dirt on the front–nothing that would offend a rough-and-tumble goalie like the Gumper (may he rest in peace).
Really like this one Sal, don’t think I’d seen it before. Great card.
Cool card. I actually like the back even more. I wonder how many people went after the “Gordon Howe” autographed puck!
I guess Bruins, Hawks and Rangers fans weren’t sending in their 30cents!
i also have this Gump Worsley card, albeit not in as good condition. Bottom left corner is missing for example. Do you have a range in value for this card?
Love that card!
In 1972, I was a 10 year old kid that went to every Saturday night home game of the Minnesota North Stars. The players got to know me as the kid sitting along side the entry way to the North Stars bench. Gump Worsley was my favorite player! One Saturday night in December 1972, Gump gave me slightly broken goalie stick that he used in a previous game, along with a North Star’s practice puck and an actual game puck. Lou Nanne was just passing by and autographed the stick. I still have all three items in the same condition as the night Gump gave them to me. Interesting pieces of history if anyone would want to add them to their collection.
Awesome story. Thank you for sharing it. As much as I’d love a stick used by “The Gumper,” I’m afraid it is probably out of my price range.
