Beckett Hockey #209My geek joy continues! This month, my second article for Beckett Hockey Magazine was published.

Entitled Pro Set Story, it is a retro review of the 1990-91 Pro Set Hockey Set, as well as a short overview of the Pro Set Company. The article appears on pages 20-22 of issue 209, which just came out last week. Beckett Hockey #209 - Pro Set ArticleSo, go buy (or borrow) a copy of the new Beckett Hockey. Should anyone wish to leave their feedback–or criticisms–here, please feel free to do so. I am always striving to improve as a writer.

  1. Nice! The 1990 Pro-Set hockey set was the first that I ever hand-collated as a child. Sadly I have no idea what happened to it, but I’m just a few cards away from completing it again.

Looks like a great article, I’m going to have to pick up a Beckett. Congratulations!

  2. Thanks, Shane. If you let me know what cards you need from the 1990-91 Pro Set hockey set, I’ll send them to you. I have probably 3,000 extras.

  3. I must admit that in my mind I had written off this set as being of little value. Like many others, I had purchased many packs as a youth and then stored them away in a shoebox, buried in the closet somewhere, never to be seen again. I still have all of my cards, including the Eddie Balfour rookie and who knows what else. I look forward to digging out my partial 1990 set and may even consider building it with my 6-year old son. It made me realize that in our constant quest for that hi-value pull, sometimes we forget what this hobby is really all about. Thanks again for the article – it was a great read!

  4. Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!

  5. Thanks for the compliment, "Anonymous."

You are right–my older stuff is not as good. I have taken a few writing classes in grad school, and they have paid off in dividends.

  6. dear sal, iread your article and it was great. pro set was one of the first cards I started to collect, because my uncle would give me some. iloved looking for rookies of players like nick lidstrom or dominik hasek, and also the history cards.
