That’s Great! But How Long Will It Last?
The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) finally has a set of trading cards – and those cards have been well-received by The Hobby.
Since it was released on January 22, the new Upper Deck “2024 PWHL First Edition” cards have been a hot commodity. In just two short weeks, box prices have more than doubled – going from around $80 and now selling for between $180 and $200 at hobby shops…that is, if you can even FIND a box.
Big online retailers like Steel City Collectibles, Blowout Cards, and D.A. “No Bounty to See Here” Card World are currently sold out of PWHL cards.
D.A. Card World even claims that they are currently *buying* sealed boxes of 2024 PWHL First Edition for $130 each. LOL! Why sell it to D.A. for $130 when you can sell the same box yourself on eBay, with average sold prices between $200 and $300 – for one 12-pack box!
Even base sets are selling for more money than you think they would. Complete 50-card base sets are selling on eBay for between $40 and $60. Those are almost UHEARD of prices for base sets.
So, how long will the PWHL set remain the darling of hockey card collectors, breakers, flippers, and the rest of “The Hobby?”
When will prices cool off, like they gradually did for 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 2 boxes and Connor Bedard’s Young Guns rookie card? Will collectors move on to something new, such as EX-2000 which comes out later this month? Will the enthusiasm for PWHL cards continue when the 2025 set comes out at the end of June?
We talked about PWHL cards in the most-recent episode of the Puck Junk Podcast, while Clemente Lisi wrote about it in his latest column.
Next week, we will give a more comprehensive review of the 2024 PHWL First Edition set. I finally have a box in hand, ready to be opened. So, I can see for myself what all the hype is about.

Hi Sal,
Nice article I think the PWHL is here to stay, looking forward to next years Young Guns crop with the very first time number 1 Draft Pick Sarah Fillier.
The prices you have added to the article on Hobby Boxes they must be U.S. dollars for what ever reason any Canadian follower you have may mistake this for Canadian funds. Just like the Beckett Guide I know the Beckett all those prices are U.S. funds after all the magazine is printed in the USA and here in Canada people just don’t get it when you tell them all prices are U.S. thank you just something to keep in mind.

Thanks. I do have to be more mindful of which currency (U.S. or Canadian) I am referring to when mentioning prices. 🙂
