Box Break: 2013-14 Panini Titanium Hockey Retail Tin

2013-14 Panini Titanium Hockey

I bought this tin of 2013-14 Panini Titanium Hockey at a local Target store a few months ago, then forgot I had it until now. What treasures lie within this tin?

28 Base Cards

baseTitanium strikes me as an “Anti-SP” as far as design goes. Both sets have achromatic backgrounds, but whereas SP uses a white backdrop, Titanium’s design utilizes a black-and-white backdrop. It is kind of an edgy look, as far as hockey cards go. It also makes the player’s uniform colors really stand out.

base_backCard backs are standard fare for Panini — one line of stats, compartmentalized data, with height, weight, and so forth appearing in “capsules,” and a biographical blurb.

1 Rookie Card

rookieAndrej Sustr is a defenseman who played 43 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season. This card is numbered 239 / 299.

1 Red Parallel

parallelIt’s like the regular card, but the background is red! Oh, and it’s numbered 193 / 199, for what it’s worth.

1 Jumbo Rookie Card

jumboIt’s like the regular card, but twice as big. Will the innovation ever end, Panini? (Actually, you all know how I really feel about big cards.)

What I like about 2013-14 Panini Titanium: The base card design looks good. One oversized “box-topper” card is always a fun inclusion in a product.

What I don’t like about 2013-14 Panini Titanium: You only get one “pack” inside the tin — well, actually two: a stack of 30 cards wrapped in clear cellophane, and the one oversized card in it’s own foil pack. I’d rather have seveal smaller packs, and thus increased chances for more rookie cards, hits and whatnot.

Rating 2 out of 5I’m basing this rating on the retail tin. Hobby boxes might yield far better results, but really this was not a fun product to break. One pack? One rookie card (OK, two if you count the jumbo Seth Jones card). Spending $20 on, say, Contenders blaster will net you two autographs, while spending $20 on a Prizm blaster will get you more rookie cards.Which makes me ask, what is the big draw for Titanium?

  1. For me the draw was at the National show in Toronto in the spring. For each box you purchased ($100 or so) you’d get 5 packs (i think?) of cards at the Panini booth which features all sorts of the odds and ends they wanted to get rid of. For me this included a couple McKinnon rookies among a plethora of fun patches. Definitely worth it!
