Video: 1991 NHL All-Star Weekend

Year: 1991
Length: 11 minutes

This video clip  shows highlights from the 1991 NHL All-Star Weekend  January 17 to 19, 1991 in Chicago. It is from a  VHS tape that the Chicago Blackhawks sent their season ticket holders.

There are many interviews with great players like Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Jeremy Roenick and Mark Messier. It also addresses the controversy of goaltender Ed Belfour being snubbed as an All-Star selection.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s in the video:

  • 0:10 to 1:45 – All-Star skills clinic & autograph session
  • 1:46 to 4:05 – Heroes of Hockey Game
  • 4:06 to 7:47 – NHL Skills Competition
  • 7:48 to 10:55 – 42nd NHL All-Star Game

The video is a bit long, so I understand if you don’t want to watch it. However, I took a screen shot from the 2:20 mark:

Yes! My 15-year old self is in the background of Dennis Hull’s interview.

This was after the All-Star skills clinic held on Thursday. I honestly don’t remember seeing myself back in the video “back in the day,” so I was quite surprised to see this while digitizing the footage.

The Lost Luongo Poem

I’ve been sick since Thursday–and had to run errands today in the rain–so not much time for a blog post today. Plus the Blackhawks will be on in an hour when they take on the Sharks.

But I thought I’d share this: it is another of TSN’s hilarious Roberto Luongo poems–this one about the Green Men who mock opponents in the penalty box. I’m not sure if this one actually aired, or if it was just an exclusive on the TSN website. Old news by now, but it’s new to you if you haven’t seen it yet.

And if you haven’t seen the other hilarious poems read by Luongo, check them out here.

Roberto Luongo Reading Poetry

Yesterday, my girlfriend and a friend of hers commandeered the living room to paint and make collages. Artsy stuff.

This displaced me from watching the Blackhawks-Canucks game on TV, so I watched TSN’s feed of the game online.

Boy, am I glad that I did!

During intermission, TSN aired this hilarious segment featuring Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo reading poetry. His verses were about the Sedin Twins, Dustin Byfuglien, the shootout and other hockey-related subjects. Check out the video above–it is 2 minutes of pure genius.

Why can’t U.S. hockey coverage be this funny?

Monster Drops the F-Bomb

In last night’s Toronto-Montreal game, Maple Leafs’ defenseman Mike Komisarek accidentally passed the puck to Canadiens’ forward Mike Cammalleri, resulting in a sweet one-timer goal. Hilarious, because everyone knows that you should never pass the puck in front of your own net.

Even more hilarious was Leafs’ goalie Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson bellowing  the F-Bomb at the top of his lungs after he realized that it was his own d-man who set up Cammalleri.

Here is video of Cammaleri’s goal and Gustavsson’s reaction.

Historic Hologram

1991-92 Pro Set NHL 75th Anniversary HologramEveryone who collected hockey cards during the early 1990s knows of the Stanley Cup Hologram released by Pro Set during the 1990-91 season. But many don’t know about his little brother – the NHL 75th Anniversary Hologram, produced a year later. To commemorate the NHL’s diamond anniversary, Pro Set made 10,000 copies of this card and randomly inserted them into foil packs of 1991-92 Pro Set Series 2 hockey cards. 2010 ‘Hawks Con – Day Two

NOTE: You might want to read the Day One recap first:
2010 ‘Hawks Con – Day One

Chicago, IL – July 31, 2010

We arrived at the convention around 9:30 AM, and headed over to the autograph room to try and get wristbands. Scheduled to sign at 11 AM were Stan Mikita and Eric Daze.

It turns out that Mikita was sick, and did not attend the show over the weekend. My girlfriend and I each got a wristband for Eric Daze. Continue reading “2010 ‘Hawks Con – Day Two”

2010 ‘Hawks Con – Day One

After some computer problems, then a road trip to Memphis, I am finally getting around to posting my recap of the 2010 Blackhawks Convention (“Hawks Con”).

Chicago, IL – July 30, 2010

Opening Ceremony
We arrive at ‘Hawks Con around 4:30 PM. Every year, the convention officially starts with an “Opening Ceremony” at 5:00 PM. In 2008, this was very cool, as the team announced that Jonathan Toews was appointed captain, and that  number 3 was being retired to honor both Keith Magnusson and Pierre Pilote. Huge news that the die-hards like myself got to hear first. Continue reading “2010 ‘Hawks Con – Day One”

Video: Photo with Stanley

The Stanley Cupthe oldest freakin’ sports trophy in the world–was downtown in Chicago on Tuesday afternoon. Fans were able to get their picture taken with the almighty chalice.

I was one such fan, waiting about 1 1/2 hours for my photo opportunity. I think it came out pretty well.

Also, I was featured prominently on the CBS Channel 2 news in Chicago.. Here is a link to the video–that is me near the beginning (before I put my ‘Hawks jersey on), at the very end, and peppered throughout.
